Our Mission: Build Healthier Communities Through Children's Health and Science Education
What if... children had the tools they need from an early age to make smart health decisions?
This idea drives us every day at HealthStart.
HealthStart’s programs give children the science for building strong brains and bodies so they can reach their full potential and contribute to our communities. The science helps kids understand why we eat and do certain things to keep our bodies healthy. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that when we take care of one another and our environment, we can build community health and well-being.
It has never been more critical than it is now for children and their families to understand health and science basics for preventing illness. When we know how our bodies function and interact with the world around us, we can all prevent and manage diseases.

By five years of age, most of us have established our food and fitness preferences. This sets the link between childhood and adult health. It’s also easier to learn a good habit than break a bad one! As a result of HealthStart’s programs, HealthStart kids have the tools to make good health decisions and influence their families and even their communities. |
How we do it
|
HealthStart has helped children as young as three years of age build healthy habits through health and science education programs since 2010. HealthStart gives kids the “why” behind good health with science experiments, physical activities, and wellness lessons to keep themselves and others healthy. Our tools help a child build a foundation for making wise health decisions at every stage of life.

What's Our Story?
In 2010, Robin Herskowitz founded HealthStart following a long career and interest in community health that began with her upbringing. The greatest influence on her health-conscious family was her grandmother, Ida F. Levinson, a passionate public health advocate and pioneering woman who directed the Harris County Public Health Department in the 1930s. Her grandmother’s beliefs in public service and early health prevention inspired Robin. HealthStart reflects those beliefs. Today, we have a fantastic team that supports an army of volunteers, teachers, and community partners that have helped us deliver health science education to more than 6,400 kids.
