Children’s Health Education Workshops (CHEWS) use stories, science experiments, and fun physical activities to fuel young minds. We do this with a series of interactive workshops in the community to teach children the “why” of good health. We provide the blueprints for well being with tools to make smart food and fitness choices and build skills to take care of each other.
Each workshop is structured so children can easily apply what they learn during the workshops to their daily lives. CHEWS lessons foster a child’s ability to reach their full potential by providing tools for lifelong health and well-being.
Each workshop ends with a healthy snack that the children make themselves. The children try new foods or rediscover familiar fruits and vegetables by preparing them in fun, fresh ways. HealthStart sends the recipe for each snack home with the children so that they can make the snack with their families.
Children share what they learn with their families, strengthening peer, family, and community ties. As a result, our students become health “change agents,” influencing their families and community by changing how we eat, move, and live together.
We can hold our workshops almost anywhere, with any number of sessions to meet participant needs. HealthStart has presented CHEWS in libraries, after school programs, low-income housing sites, farmers’ markets, churches, and health clinics.
