Ready, Set, Goal

The beginning of the year is all about setting new and exciting goals. Goals related to fitness, nutrition, community, and any other part of life that you wish to improve and or enhance for yourself and your family. Getting kids involved in goal setting can be a great way to encourage advancement in their life as well.

The most of effective goals are S.M.A.R.T. goals. Goals should be Specific to the end result, Measurable over time, Achievable with the resources and support around you, Realistically achievable, and Timely with a clear end path and steps to achieve it. If a goal meets these five criteria it is much more likely to be achieved.

Now you may be asking how goal setting can become a family activity. Make it a group activity with one of the following goal setting activities:
  1. Create a Family Bucket List: set aside an evening to brainstorm a list of activities (e.g., once per week we will cook a meal together featuring a food item we have never tried before), experiences (e.g., we will travel to the Grand Canyon and camp in Yosemite in Fall 2018), and achievement goals (e.g., we will participate in a 5K by 7/1/18 as a family)
  2. Wheel of Fortune: create a wheel that is separated into segments featuring important parts of life (e.g., family, school, fitness). Have each family member spin the wheel and then write a S.M.A.R.T. goal that fits that portion of their lives. Share at the end.
  3. Create a Vision Board: have each family member find photographs in magazines that represent their hopes and dreams and then glue these onto a poster board. From the poster board have each person write S.M.A.R.T. goals that will get them closer to manifesting their vision board.

If you make setting S.M.A.R.T. goals a family activity, your family may have their best year ever in 2018!
