Unit 2: Meet Your Bones Teacher's Guide & Resource Materials

Students will understand that their bones provide the body with a framework. They will learn how bones protect the body’s organs and help us move. Students will know the part bones play in making blood. Students will learn about foods and types of exercise needed for strong bones.

Chapter 1: Bone Structure
Students will understand that their bones provide the body with a framework. They will understand that strong bones protect the organs of the body and help us move.
Chapter 2: Plethora of Bones
Students will identify different bones in the skeleton. They will understand different kinds of bones help with different movement. Students will learn flat bones protect organs and soft tissue.
Chapter 3: Inside Bones
Students will understand what bones are made of and identify the parts inside. They will understand the importance of bones in manufacturing healthy blood.
Chapter 4: A Healthy Start for Bones
Students will understand how diet, exercise, and good hygiene build strong, healthy bones. They will identify foods high in calcium and vitamin D, K, and C. They will understand the importance of high-impact and resistance exercises. They will understand that bones need protection in the form of helmets, seatbelts and toothbrushes.

1. Why is it important to take care of your bones?
2. What are at least 3 things your bones do?
3. What're your bones made of?
4. What do your bones help your body make?
5. Name 3 or more foods that are good for your bones.
6. Name 3 or more exercises you can do to make your bones strong.
