Unit 5: Meet Your Digestive System Teacher's Guide & Resource Materials

Students will understand the importance of the digestive process. They will learn how their stomach, pancreas, kidney, liver and gallbladder help break food down for fuel. Students will know how food is adsorbed in the body. They will know the foods and exercises that help the digestive system do it’s job.

Chapter 1: Down in the Mouth
Students will understand the importance of the digestive process. They will identify parts of the mouth and throat. They will understand what saliva is and where it comes from.
Chapter 2: The Organs
Students will identify the stomach, pancreas, kidney, liver and gallbladder. They will understand how these help break food down for fuel. They will understand how and why we vomit when we are sick with a stomach virus or have food poisoning.
Chapter 3: The Large and Small of It
Students will identify the small and large intestines. They will understand their structure, how food is absorbed through their walls and how waste is eliminated. They will understand what diarrhea and gas are and how and why we get it.
Chapter 4: A Healthy Start for the Digestive System
Students will identify foods high in digestive enzymes, fiber, and the need for amino acids. They will understand what happens if you don’t get enough to drink. Students will understand that exercise is important for digestion. They will gain a new respect for toothbrushes and dental floss.
Questions children should be able to answer
1. Why is it important to take care of your digestive system?
2. What are at least 3 things your digestion system does?
3. What’s the first step in digesting your food?
4. Name 3 or more foods that are good for your digestion system.
5. Name 3 or more exercises you can do to make your digestive system work well.
