Unit 7: Life Around You Teacher's Guide & Resource Materials
Students will understand the importance of plants and how plants help keep the earth healthy. They learn about the vital nutrition fruits and vegetables provide. Students will identify what creatures need for good health. Students will understand the connection between plants and animals. They will understand things they can do to help keep the earth healthy.

Chapter 1: Plants
Students will understand the importance that plant life plays in their lives. They will identify the anatomy of a plant and the process of photosynthesis. They will understand why plants are so beneficial to the health of the environment—for erosion control and the atmosphere.
Chapter 2: Eat Your Veggies
Students will identify the anatomy of a plant and its edible parts. They will understand the nutrition value of fruits and vegetables, how they get from seed to their tables, and understand how fresh foods are higher in nutrients. They will understand why it is important to the environment for food to be obtained close to home.
Chapter 3: All Creatures Great and Small
Students will identify different animal species: birds, reptiles, fish and mammals. They will observe how biological adaptations allow for survival in particular environments. Students will identify what creatures need in order to maintain good health. They will understand the concepts of endangerment and keystone species.
Chapter 4: Webs and Chains
Students will understand the concepts of Food Webs and Food Chains. They will understand the connection between plants and animals. They will identify things in their lives that put pressure on the environment and changes they can make to reduce the stress on the environment by conserving natural resources.
Questions children should be able to answer
1. How are plants and animals important to your health?
2. Name at least 3 plants that are good for your health.
3. What do creatures need for good health?
4. Name 3 or more things you can do to keep the earth healthy so plants and animals can be healthy.
