What Are You Feeding?

Picture

What Are YOU Feeding? enlightens children about the health benefits of the food they choose to eat for school lunch using a labeling system grounded in HealthStart’s HEY! Nutrition model. HealthStart analyzes the school menu items using USDA information to determine which items nourish which body systems. There are no “good” or “bad” foods here, just nutrition information anchored in the concrete idea of keeping your body healthy and strong.

Colorful icons tell kids what foods are good for the brain, bones, circulatory system, muscles, and digestive system. Some dishes may be good for several body systems, others may not be good for any, but everyone with the WAYF? Analysis has information for making smart decisions about what they eat.

What does What Are Your Feeding Look Like In-Person?

Identifying body system stickers, placed in front of each dish served, let students see how their food choices take care of each body system. Stickers are placed above each lunch item by cafeteria staff, parent volunteers, or even older students. School faculty has access to the complete analysis which shows what specific nutrients contributed to the analysis.

What does What Are Your Feeding Look Like Remotely?
WAYF can be utilized in multiple settings using HealthStart’s database system. Parents and faculty can access each day’s nutrition information using a school-specific link, showing each menu item's analysis for that day displayed. Clicking on a menu item will expand to show the list of nutrients that contributed to that analysis. Teachers, parents, and students can then click on each nutrient or ingredient to see how it meets the students’ daily nutritional needs.

Other Ways to Reinforce What Are You Feeding?
Other components can be built into this model like themed days of the week, such as “Brain food Mondays” or “Bone food Tuesdays.” This highlights the foods that feed that particular body system, encouraging students to try them at lunchtime and broadening the healthy foods they are exposed to.

In addition, students can complete a “scorecard” to track which parts of their bodies they have fed. The goal is for students to meet ⅓ of their daily nutritional needs during lunch by supporting each body system every day.

With HealthStart’s training and labeling system, we create “teachable moments,” whether you’re in the cafeteria, classroom, or at home. What Are YOU Feeding? also helps parents and administrators recognize the nutritional value of the foods they make available to students. What Are YOU Feeding? is an excellent opportunity for parents, teachers, and staff to partner with a shared goal of giving every child the resources they need to build healthy futures.
